Across the country, people who lead place-based collaborations tell us the same thing: this work matters, but it is also hard. Backbone leaders help partners stay focused on a shared vision, build trust, and move complex systems-change efforts forward. Yet even though this role is essential, very few learning opportunities are designed specifically for the people doing this work every day.
To help meet that need, we’re excited to launch the Backbone Leaders Learning Lab, a virtual program created for leaders who support or guide place-based collaborations, including collective impact initiatives. This Learning Lab offers a supportive space to strengthen leadership skills, explore new tools, and connect with peers who understand the realities of collaborative work.
Why This Learning Lab Now
Backbone leaders are navigating a challenging landscape. Many are facing shifting political environments, uncertain funding, and the ongoing tension between meeting urgent needs and advancing long-term systems change. And this work can feel lonely. Leaders often carry heavy responsibilities without a network of peers who understand the role.
The Learning Lab was created so that no one has to navigate these challenges alone. It provides dedicated time to learn, reflect, build confidence, and reconnect with the purpose that drives collaborative work.
What Participants Will Experience
The Learning Lab blends training, practical tools, and peer learning across four virtual sessions:
- Session 1: February 25, 2026, 1pm – 4pm ET
- Session 2: March 11, 2026, 1pm – 4pm ET
- Session 3: March 24 or 25, 2026, 1pm – 2:30pm ET (Group Coaching; pick the day that works for you)
- Session 4: April 8, 2026, 1pm – 4pm ET
Each session includes a mix of instruction, reflection, and small-group discussion. Participants will explore:
- Strengthening backbone leadership
- Sustaining momentum in long-term collaborative efforts
- Understanding and advancing systems change
- Leading through uncertainty
Who Should Join
This program is ideal if you serve in a backbone role, leading a collective impact effort or other place-based partnership. You do not need long experience in the field, just a commitment to grow and to support collaborative work.
Backbone leaders hold essential work in their communities—and deserve spaces designed to support them. We hope you will join us for this new Learning Lab and connect with others doing this meaningful work.
